I also seem to sleep very well in backwards seats. The best sleep I've ever gotten on a flight has been upstairs in window seats on the BA 747 and on the AA 787-8 in 6L.
I think it helps that your head is forward of your feet (with the nose of the aircraft slightly inclined during flight).

As to seating backwards on an aircraft... I did it on BA LHR-JFK once and actually liked it. Slept very well, and really didn't notice that I was rear-facing until we were landing.
