It can be like this on the South Island, but Auckland weather is usually pretty good. And December is the middle summer when it can be quite hot. As others have said, 10 hours is enough time to get a feel for the city, and there are plenty of things to do/visit over that time. And if you do go back to the airport, they offer massages in the Koru Lounge (or they used to).
