Under Marriott Rewards, the only room type guarantee with cash handout is King vs. 2 double, and smoking vs. non-smoking; this is not applicable in OP's situation.
However, with this situation, as well as yyznomad's example, these are room downgrades. With downgrades, the compensation is not written in the T&C of the MR or SPG programs, but negotiable with the property itself. This could be in forms of reduction in room rate (which the hotel attempted to do), additional amenities (such as free breakfast for the stay, $100 F&B credit, free bottle of wine, etc.), or compensation in points. Sounds like the property went with option #3 , which I am assuming is the equivalent of 1 night of points at the same property. To me this seems generous and equitable.
I had a similar situation at a Sheraton property, where my upgrade was confirmed via platinum suite upgrade, but found out that I was downgraded upon check-in. The MOD, unfortunately, was the executive chef of the hotel restaurant and had no front desk experience. Nonetheless, since they could not refund the suite upgrade, they provided the equivalent of 1 night stay in points as compensation, which I thought was more than fair.
