I was in Sorrento in October for a week with my son. We stayed at the Hilton and used public transport- we flew into Rome and took the train to Naples and then the sCircumvesuviana train to Sorrento. We needed a taxi to take us from the train station in Sorrento to the Hilton because we had luggage- bt found it an easy walk without our bags.

We did day trips to Capri by ferry, Naples by train,Amailfi and Ravello by bus one eay and boat return, and Positano by bus . Since you will be in a relatively off season some of the boats may not be running between Amalfi and Sorrento or schedules may be limited.
