Also, the fact that he's being given the option of the Mileage Multiplier means that he is purchasing a non-reward ticket. The Mileage Multiplier is not an option, as least as far as I know, when booking award flights.
It is more advantageous then buying the miles the normal way, because you avoid the transaction fee.
If you need a ticket right away, and are a few miles from the award miles, then it might be more advantageous to use mm to get the miles, rather than paying for the entire ticket
