BA could do something similar without much difficulty.
It might have some use, but it would not have prevented the OP's predicament as he stated that he assumed it was fine as his passport was still valid on his return due date. Had it got to be individually useful and given advice for an individual journey then we end up in the murky waters of slippery slope and issues of responsibilities for changed policies and errors.
