My experience is similar to others'. I called before AF posted, "no retention offers" on my account. Was advised to call back after it posted. AF posted a few days later, called back. Again, "no retention offers" and agents refuse to transfer to retention agent. After several phone calls I was able to 'escalate' to some 'manager's manager' and she offered me 5,000 miles to keep the card without any sending requirements. Last year I was able to get the usual $95 credit after spending 1K.

Some advice to others - it seems that an overseas agent (not India, possibly Philippines?) answers the phone regardless of the time of day I called. Immediately ask to speak to someone in the U.S. and they will transfer you no questions asked. That way you can avoid listening to their scripted B.S. and escalate the call much quicker.
