EVA Air Fined for Repeated Violations of Labor Law

EVA Air had a hefty NT550,000 fine levied against them after a random labor inspection by the Ministry of Labor found that a flight attendant working the BR198/197 turn had exceeded her 12-hour max workday by 1 minute. The specific flight attendant had been on reserve, meaning any on-duty time required an additional hour to be added on(she was on in-company standby). According to the MOL, the fine was so high because previous fines levied against BR were not effective in combatting the labor issues. BR says that they respect the rulings handed down by the MOL, but wishes that the MOL understand that weather and airport congestion are beyond their control.

Additionally, BR says that the CAA AOR allows for 14-hour workdays , but the mismatched labor law Article 84-1 only allows for 12. BR encourages the MOL and CAA to adjust accordingly. The CAA has activated the MOL for discussions on aviation employee duty changes. The EVA Air Labor Union has now used this news to renew their calls for overnights on the following routes:
TPE/TSA-TOY
KHH-NRT(currently overnight in the summer months)
TPE-PNH
TPE-PEK(currently overnight during month with the most historical 12-hour rule violations)
