I don't think this is quite as unprecedented as the article implies. I have a friend who is a long time pilot for USAir, and she says that USAir completely trashed all pensions some time ago.

Bear in mind I am not necessarily supporting this move -- in my friend's case, she is left totally without any retirement benefits at all, so it is a horrible thing. I am just saying that it has happened before.
