AA and UA allow the equivalent of Golds to pick their extra legroom seats at booking time for them and 8 companions. My point is, you might not find better availability on last minute flights, even paid. I just booked an itinerary and was going to have no problem paying for C+ but only middles were left. And there's no way I will pay extra to sit in a middle seat.

Aisle + windows are not just being grabbed by companion upgrades, any more than the GM luggage tag in first class is someone who cheated a PM/DM out of an upgrade. Some of us pay for the cabin we want, and aren't paying extra to sit in a middle seat - even if flying with a companion. My wife and I can handle being separated by a stranger or a few rows to keep our aisle+window preferences. Delta knows that too, and that's probably part of why they run their system the way they do - an open aisle or window is more likely to sell.
