As a side note, arriving from DRW to SIN, we had a security check upon arrival! Never seen that before, anywhere. Everyone was escorted via a security theatre before we could proceed to immigration or transfer flight (where there would be a security theatre once again at the gate).
As a SIN-based flyer, my personal opinion based on my personal anecdotal observations is that:
- About a third of these are truly random; probably required by some government regulation
- About two-thirds of these are when they have reason to believe a drug trafficker or smuggler may be on board
