You can use the two BA Apps to help here. Firstly the main BA App will give you a boarding pass and so long as you have enough time between flights, with hand baggage only it's very little different from having a through ticket. It should allow you to stay airside and avoid the UK Border. You can buy the ticket through the App and get boarding passes though it too. You can also simply buy a ticket when you get to LHR, I'm not sure I would recommend this, but you need to do this in Flight Connections before going to the security check upstairs. The other BAEC App is useful for checking whether there is Avios availability for LHR to CDG - just check once a day for that. The main BA App can also check availability, but the specialist BAEC App is a bit slicker. The other obvious option, if you (e.g.) have any MR points on your Amex card, is to check whether AF-KLM have any redemption availability. That's a different terminal, and you'd lose out on CCR access in T5 but there is fairly significant competition between BA and AF for fares.
