Traveling with a non-elite companion and AA.com is requiring that we manually request upgrade using stickers for short hops like PIT-DCA and CLT-PIT.

ETA: Right now I am a Platinum, but will hit EXP by the end of November three weeks before this trip. Not sure if AA IT is sophisticated enough to adjust my upgrade to complimentary while keeping my companion on using my stickers.
yes, the comp upgrade is only for passengers with status. you will always need stickers for a +1 without status, or a +1 with status (gold or platinum) on flight segments longer than 500 mi.
