Companion upgrade on flights under 500 miles - we still have to pay for sticker even though flights shorter than 500 miles are complimentary for all elites now?

Traveling with a non-elite companion and AA.com is requiring that we manually request upgrade using stickers for short hops like PIT-DCA and CLT-PIT.

ETA: Right now I am a Platinum, but will hit EXP by the end of November three weeks before this trip. Not sure if AA IT is sophisticated enough to adjust my upgrade to complimentary while keeping my companion on using my stickers.
