Update - I have an upgrade tomorrow with myself and my wife (GOLD) . Three stickers for my wife and she has one in her account. I have 21 in mine but I cannot check us in and am told that there are not enough stickers. Called AA desk and was told that if I want the stickers to come from my account I have to do it at the airport.
Couple of points:
1) the comment upthread that it pulls from higher status account does not seem to be true anymore
2) I'm not sure what that means to upgrade list position. My flight was J6 yesterday and is J1 right now. I don't know if we got upgraded but can't process it until we get to the airport or if you get by-passed if there is a sticker issue.
My experience from just last week. I listed my wife who was on a separate PNR (and who has gold status) as my companion. We both got upgraded together days before the flight (well before the gold window, so I know she was properly linked to me). However, I couldn't check her in online because she didn't have enough stickers. Even a call to the CK desk couldn't fix this, so we had to deal with this at the airport to ensure the stickers pulled from my account.
