Managed to get access when moved to gold after landing from the flight that made me Gold. Explained it to the staff on the desk (expecting to be sent to the Club lounge) and they were very willing to let us in.

So best option is to just ask on the day! Just don't expect to get it and it will be a nice surprise if you do.
