I have a 13 hour layover at HEL on 12/26 and I plan to head downtown. I was in Helsinki back in July and I enjoyed it and think you will too. This was a particular gem I loved:

The area around the library which includes Senate Square over to the Russian Orthodox Church (Uspenski) is very pleasant regardless of the weather.
