You're not going to have Pre-check on a foreign passport unless you have Global Entry on that passport, which you won't get if you are also an American citizen since you've got to come into the US on your American passport.
However I see no reason why you can't use your US passport with United and just show the check-in agent your second passport with Australian visa so they know you're entitled to enter Australia.
