Your logic is flawed in that award inventory is not a permanent or constant bucket. In fact all fare buckets are constantly dynamic based on current demand for seats. Hence, if in the five days your award has been on hold there has been great demand for your paid tickets for your flight (or even for other flights between the same two places around the same dates), then it is highly likely the award seats when cancelled will not reappear,
