There are two ways to do this; one involves going through passport control (twice) but no security, while the other involves going through security but no passport control.
For the first option follow the signs for A gates. When you arrive at the main terminal, go through passport control into A and walk through the terminal following the signs for D gates. When you arrive in D go through passport control.
For the second option follow the signs for D gates. When you arrive at the main terminal continue following the signs for D gates and you will arrive at security check.
If you have an EU passport you may want to try the first option. And don’t miss Heidi, a mooing cow and Alpen horns on the Skymetro!

NewbieRunner - Again,
wow, what a great, comprehensive piece of advice! Thank you so much, really.
It's strange: I have been to ZRH so many times over the years -- always on BA, even though Swiss would be my preferred airline by a long margin if the choice was mine -- but I really don't know the airport as well as I should, so many thanks for the above. It's genuinely enlightening!
Ah yes, Heidi! I must have ridden the Skymetro before in that case, because I remember very fondly the sound of cow bells and a projection of Heidi on the walls of the train tunnel!

Whenever I come back to Zurich and hear/see these, I always feel so happy to be back.
This will be my 40th or thereabouts trip to ZRH in the last ten years -- I fell in love with Grindelwald in 2008 and have returned several times each year since. Now that I have your great advice -- thank you again! -- I can enjoy ZRH even more now.
All the best to you.
