Thanks, everyone for the advice. I will look at southwest and amr group as well. I have for the past 6 months been trying to wrap my head around the customs process in the DR and quite honestly I don't think their own people know it accurately.
I always like to think big and try to do it on my own but this by far has been more challenging than understanding my wife.
Many years ago I moved back to the DR after finishing school in the US. Took with me all my stuff, as shipping by air or sea was not very practical or cheap from SLC. I took 6 x 70 LBS Bags plus a few plastic bin full of books and other stuff (traveling with my parents meant that we all had a good baggage allowance). Delta didn't have any issues checking them and adding extra tape and fragile stickers to the boxes. The whole shipment made it to the DR with no issues (just a few TSA friendly notes left in a few bags and in the boxes), and we had no issues going through customs after showing my student visa. If you are "moving" to the DR and bring a lot of luggage, dealing with customs at the airport will be much more easier than the whole import process you will undergo if shipping by air.
The arrivals VIP service will only help you to bring your checked luggage to the arrivals lounge, but someone from customs will make the determination to inspect your luggage before you leave the lounge. If traveling with 1 or 2 bags you should be fine, but traveling with many bags will most likely get you a red flag.
