My parents did this for a trip to Japan recently. Simply call them and rebook the award for the latest date possible (i.e. 12 months from now) for no fee.

When you eventually find out the actual dates you want to go, call them and rebook the flight back to the dates you want.

This was actually suggested by the United agent who handled my phone call.
