I lived in Virginia for a few years and stay in crystal city when visiting dc. 5 mins from DCA, good rates on hotel, and the metro is right there. There are some bars and restaurants around if you really want to stay in the area, plus the big mall, but we almost always end up taking the train into DC proper.
