As for NZ waiving the service fees there is certainly no guarantee they will waive these just because something can't be done online, but in some cases they will.
But I'm really curious about the "each journey" aspect. In the past I've been charged US$50 total for the trip, I've never been charged US$50 "each journey" (from LAX to AKL, from AKL to LAX). It's just something I've never come across. Is it because they were booking through Air Tahiti Nui? It came as a complete surprise.
