But you won't have 'sweet time' if you try to do this drive all in one day. Yes, you'll have two shots at it. But, you've got a long drive that you MUST get done each time. That limits your options considerably. It will be tiring and rushed to complete this drive in 1 day, precisely because there are so many waterfalls, walks, and photo opportunities along the way. You will find yourself with no choice but to pass these opportunities by, if you do this drive straight through.
I really think you'll appreciate going straight to Wanaka on arrival to ZQN. See Wanaka and surrounds in that half day, and have an easier drive to Frans Josef. See things between Queenstown and Wanaka by car on the way, rather than going into Queenstown. Or, you can do some of the Queenstown stuff before you drive to Wanaka if you prefer. You've got 5 other nights in Queenstown not including this one-off night, so plenty of time to see sunsets, dine out, etc. But, I won't press on this any further. I've just done this drive twice, and can't help but try to assist with my experience!
