You can check in a bag on AA due to OW status or having the right credit card.

Although potentially confusing, IB and BA do include one piece of checked luggage in their standard economy fare, which is why award bookings also receive a one piece allowance. So far, they haven't dared to make awards Hand Baggage Only...
