I'd personally give the Mount Cook tour a miss if you are busing to CHC and have a quieter day around Central Otago. I question returning to Te Anau too after doing the Milford Tour.
We have already booked the mt. cook tour and we really wanted to visit that part of the Kiwiland!

Perhaps this would be a better option:
Day 9: Drive to Te Anau. See the caves. Overnight in Milford Sound, or Te Anau.
Day 10: See Milford Sound. Return to Queenstown. (Note, depending on weather you could drive straight to Milford on Day 9 and see the caves on return).
Day 11: Drop off car at ZQN. Take bus tour to Mt Cook Village. Stay in Mt Cook Village.
Day 12: Take bus to CHC. There is a bus leaving around 2pm and arriving around 7pm.

Alternatively you could self-drive but that would be 4 long driving days in a row. So either do a tour to Milford/Te Anau, or take the bus to CHC, IMO.
Sorry for the confusion we will be driving to CHC, (Mt. cook and Milford sound is via a tour company so i wont be driving those 2 days)

Last time i checked the price the car rental from AKL - CHC (10th to 22nd) was almost same as dropping car to ZQN on 20th and picking up a free rental from 21 and 22, but i will check them out again and plan accordingly, thanks for the tip!
