I took an Uber this week and was charged the full fare, despite having $15 of Amex credit available. The credit was instead moved to something called Uber Cash, which seems to be a new-ish feature. On my next ride I was able to use that “cash” as a payment method.
I was was initially miffed about it but then realized it is a game changer. I mostly use Uber for rides to and from airports. My travel is concentrated in certain months, so I go months without taking an Uber, effectively wasting the credit.
With Uber Cash, it seems I should be able to reload the balance once per month and then use the accumulated balance on months I actually take Uber rides.
This happened to me. A few things
1) I view this as a
negative because as of now, I have not figured out how to "zero out" my Uber Cash balance. I had a $15 Amex credit applied to Uber Cash, and I needed a $20 ride, so I added $25 to my Uber Cash balance with a credit card. After a few more rides, I now have $3.80 in my "Uber Cash" that I need to use - I haven't figured out how to partially use Uber Cash and another pay method
2) The AMEX Credit still says that it "expires" one month after issue. I wouldn't trust the ability to accumulate Amex Platinum credits into your Uber Cash account month after month
