Called the retention number in the wiki and said I wanted to close my card, he asked why, I told him I don't travel much and the fee doesn't make sense and he canceled it without any effort to save. Had received retention offers for the last 3 or so years (every year since opening the card, very little spend on the card (less than $1000/year). Have a few other Amex cards with a few thousand of spend a year.
