I used to do this all the time to boost my segment count and/or stop in a city for dinner with a friend near an airport so my trips were more fun.
AC was probably more willing to do this on routes where me taking the connecting was freeing up rev seats (I was usually upgrading YYC-YYZ on my fp, but would sometimes do a western stop on the way and get in for the next morning in time for my meetings.
You can always try, no guarantees.
Actually, in my experience (and I have always had FPs running, since they came out), they never really stopped it. They stopped the ability to run segments, for the sake of running segments, on connections that couldn't be made through the FP. However, they have been able to make connections that are logical work. They have also been able to book flights to cities that are supposed to be included in the FP but, for some reason, the FP won't let you book to, or from, that City. I had that happen with DFW on a NA FP.
