I have routinely gotten free breakfasts at HI's, I can't remember the last time I didn't. The last 3 places I've been at off the top of my memory stack have all given them:

HI Louisville, KY - free breakfast vouchers

I agree that the room upgrades usually suck unless you're a repeat customer and the desk staff bump you.
