The middle seat table can be folded away, thus allowing the seat to be used as, well, a seat.
Most crew know how to do this, and with the armrest raised, the seat become pretty wide.

We have done this a few times and it works really well - it is worth avoiding row 1 though as these generally have fixed armrests (to hold the tray tables) and raising them allows a baby to lie across the seat comfortably. Also, we have found having a small bag of essentials (wipes, drinks etc) at our feet very useful during landing and takeoff.
