When you buy an airline ticket through Amex Travel and Pay-with-Points the full cost of the ticket is charged to your card, and points are redeemed to generate an offsetting credit. It's a revenue ticket, not an award ticket. You should be able to make tweaks (such as seat selection) on the airline's website, but the travel agency (Orbitz) still controls the reservation, and changes need to be made through them.
