So please stop scaremongering here - the problem NEVER has been with China or Chinese authorities, but (mostly with US- and Japanese) airlines who can't use their tools properly and should be massively fined and penalized by China, or outright banned due to terrible behaviour.
Also, carrying your passport with you in China is a legal requirement. Has nothing to do with "being safe". It's law.
Have entered China on TWOV w/ just the confirmation email on my phone multiple times, no issues. Did it just today, in fact.
