Flying for leisure only and collecting miles/status isn't mutually exclusive. Particularly if you're flying in J/F anyway, it can still make sense to collect miles. A QR return J yields enough Avios for a short haul award.

There are routes that make sense on QR and there are routes that don't make sense. UK-OZ is definitely very nice on QR. UK-JP not so much.
