I think it's probably pretty common. The majority of Diamonds are at Delta hubs where connections are rare. I've only connected on DL metal maybe 2-3 times in my life (the number goes up if you count SkyTeam partners but that's a whole different beast). As such I've never misconnected on DL (although VIPR did proactively make me miss my connection once... but I made my original connection anyway, except in way worse seats - thanks DL).
