Neither UA Mileage Plus nor LH miles&more offer upgrade possibilities using their miles.

Any idea or gift-exchange possibility with an Ansett-ff-member, how a StarGold of another ff-program then Ansett's (I am UA 1K by then and LH-Senator, I am not a member of Ansett's frequent-flier-program) could upgrade those flights to business.

My main interest would be to get confirmed upgrades on the two 'long'-haule-segments SYD-CNS and CNS-SYD - I don't care much about the MEL-SYD-segments.
