Welcome to FlyerTalk.

The page that ThreeJulietTango linked to says:

When traveling to Mexico, the Caribbean, Central or South America, you will not be able to travel with:
  • Overweight items (more than 70lb/32kgs)
  • Oversized items
  • Excess bags (only 2 checked bags allowed)
  • Boxes**
**A “box” is any container that isn’t normally used for transporting items for air travel; this includes plastic tubs, containers and coolers.
You might want to visit a Salvation Army, Army Surplus or similar outlet and buy a pair of very low cost used baggage - in a surplus store, duffel bags are on offer and they’re usually cheap and ideal for shoes and clothes. (I’ve even used surplus duffel bags for dive equipment going to areas with high reported instances of pilferage, as opposed to using dive bags.
