For a whole bunch of reasons, it is never a good idea to do unattended drop offs if remotely available. Not only for your reason, but in case of damage between drop off and the next AM and anything else that can go wrong.

Best to call the rental desk directly and get the procedure. Whatever you do, show up at the desk the next AM and make sure that the return went well.
