I got hit by a photo camera in the pay tunnel under Melbourne for going 7km/hr over the speed limit. I paid the fine -- Australia makes it really easy to pay by having you go to a web page and enter your credit card info -- but my fine was only around the low cost (AUD130) cited above. However, I thought that it was awfully petty to set the cameras at that level, especially since it seems to me that most speed limits in Oz are artificially low to begin with.
My impression is that in Oz, as in most places using cameras, speed cameras are for revenue generation purposes, not safety.
