If the Aircraft were just allowed to fly the ILS approach to 28R there would never been any issue with the alignment to the proper runway.
The reason crews have to do the" offset RNAV approach" to a visual landing is because of Noise Abatement procedures that SFO has.
If the crew could fly a normal ILS to that runway they would have clear indications when not exactly lined up with the centerline of runway 28R.
But the offset approach keeps the noise over the water as long as possible. But that then requires the crew to do a last minute visual turn to line up with the runway.
A sea of confusing lights and colors are what awaits them as they maneuver visually to the proper landing spot.
Even the preceding aircraft crew commented on the difficulty completing their approach because of the lighting.....
A tired crew would much prefer a coupled ILS approach to the runway over this complicated RNAV offset procedure.
All the safety features are already in place to prevent the crew from lining up on the wrong piece of concrete. The Airbus A320 this built in when it was manufactured
and certified 20 plus years ago.
The problem arises from airports like SFO that makes the crews do unusual procedures to fit their local restrictions.
Give the pilots an normal ILS approach straight towards the runway and all would be good !!!!!!!!
