You will not get upgraded SFO-EWR on UA ex-SFO as a 1K. If you want to fly that route up front (lie-flats) you'll need to buy discount J (discounted fares around $1300).

I recently matched to AS 75K and it is a completely different world for upgrades. I'm practically giddy how easy they are.

But for international travel from SFO, UA and its *A partners provide unmatched options. The new Polaris seats are really nice and the lounge is pretty good too.
