It is the return, but United wants almost $5000 for the change. There are still 6 seats left for sale, but none in Z which is her fare class. She is 1K, but United were not even remotely interested in being helpful
The closer you get to earlier flights departure, the Z fare class to open may up, which might drop the cost of the change from $5k to something more reasonable? Tomorrows PEK-IAD flight is Z9, so maybe keep an eye open for the cost to drop (because Z is open) as your near the earlier flights 24h checkin time?
