The 1x gas station charge was Categorized as "Transportation - Fuel" which is why I was surprised. Annoyingly the Amex website does not show the number of point per transaction like all other banks and only the phone agent can tell me. This is the first time I have visited this gas station so maybe if was a one off.
Have there been report of Amex cracking down on users who put too much 3x on gas purchase and find out it was on gift cards instead of gas? Maybe I should start buying gift cards in smaller amounts at a time.
A lot of gas station in my area are not allowing CC for gift cards. One of the store managers said it was due to reduce fraud with stolen CC.

Some gas stations in my area sell gift cards such as Amazon, iTunes, Uber, Hulu, Ebay, etc. By doing this I can get 3x points on purchases at different places using the gift cards. Not as good as 5x points for gift cards with Freedom quarterly bonuses or Ink cash at Staples but still a good option.
