Penalties for cancelling only one segment on a return ticket

Hi Everyone,

Just wondering if anyone is familiar with AC's policy for cancelling only the outbound segment of a return itinerary. I had 2 back-to-back trips( ie 4 flights leaving and departing from the same 2 cities) scheduled over an 11 day period. Something came up and I had to stay in the arrival city and not fly back to the originating city, therefore needing to cancel the 1st return flight and the 2nd departing flight.

For example, was supposed to fly:
Sept 14 YVR to YUL
Sept 18 YUL to YVR
Sept 21 YVR to YUL
Sept 25 YUL to YVR

I did take the Sept 14th flight and will take the Sept 25th flight.

I had no problem cancelling my September 18th flight and receiving credit minus the change fee. But cancelling the second outbound flight has required 3 phone calls, receiving 3 different sets of information, 2 promises to have supervisors call and what is described as punitive costs. I was told with all the penalties to cancel the outbound flight, it was probably just best to forfeit my flight coupon for it.

I was just expecting the usual flight credit minus change fee situation which is the only type of penalty noted in the flight confirmation email. I've asked for more documentation either by being directed to the information on the web site or having the agent email it to me, but they can't provide me with anything

Based on the above it seems to make no sense to purchase a domestic return itinerary when two one ways cost the same and you won't have to go through all that in the case of a cancellation.

I realize it may be an infrequent situation to only have to cancel an outbound while still keeping a return, but I'm hoping someone on the forum may be familiar with this and can help me find the policy. Thanks a lot in advance!
