Worse than being in a lounge, I spent 28 hours in Sofia airport a few years ago...
I was ticketed LGW-VAR and mid air Varna airport closed due to snow. We were diverted to Sofia and landed at about 5pm. They offered buses to Varna (which is usually 6 hours but with the winter weather and a warning for only essential travel given, would be more like double, if you are lucky) and about 30 of us said no and persuaded Bulgarian air to put us on the midnight flight to Varna, with no guarantees the airport would reopen. Midnight came and went and we were told that we could get on the 6am flight in the morning. At 6am, the flight got rescheduled to 8am, then to 10am and then back another 2 hours until 9pm when it finally came up cancelled. Due to the constant delay of 2 hours rather than a cancellation, there was no opportunity to go to a hotel. Eventually, at 9.30pm 6 of us went to the train station and took the night train to Varna. All the sleeper carriages were sold out and even in 2nd class as we got there later, there was only 1 carriage with no heating. The train was also delayed and I arrived in Varna at 9am, which was almost 3 days later than when id left England. What was worse, I had work that morning that couldnt be cancelled and somehow managed it. The flip slide, the 6 of us have remained friends to this day and look back at the time with laughter now.
