You didn't give the route, but hypothetically on MAN-ORD you would best buying from AA because BA has a shorter route than AA, and so AA gives 12 more Avios than a BA marketed flight.

The advantage of booking on AA is that it's easier to manipulate as a Prime flight on A.com than a codeshare on BA.com, and AA runs the risk of a flight change or two or seventeen. On the other hand if you get irroped and put on to Virgin, this is more likely on BA and you would get ORC, but under AA it's less likely and you typically won't get ORC.
