I don't think that you're getting tricked or forced into paying more. Unless it's a Category 1 or 7 (where P+C charges 2c/point) all of the other categories have a relatively fair valuation of points.
I also highly doubt that this is an intentional scheme by either the Hotel or Hyatt. As mentioned above, Hyatt IT is frequently a little wonky, and there could be plausible explanations. Either way though, if you've got a reservation + TSU and you're happy with it, I'd suggest just leaving it at that. You're paying more out of pocket, but saving points for later.
