If the entire upgrade was lost (not just one leg), the method of payment should be recredited (miles returned to account, SWU recredited, whatever).
If only one leg is lost, and it's not due to the passenger's fault, United will usually try to similarly upgrade you on the replacement flight. If they cannot, in most cases I have gotten the involuntary downgrade kit.
