In a location where A/C is a necessity (Hawaii doesn't make that list for me, except when the trades are not blowing), no A/C in my room would absolutely be a basis for me departing early and/or demanding they comp the stay.

I was just in Honolulu this past weekend and it was cooling down at night with a very steady trade wind. So perhaps the sleeping situation is not as bad as OP feared?
